Brad Harper, C.A.S.

My Philosophy

Recording dialogue over a microphone can accentuate all of the negative sounds in an environment. When you are talking with someone in person, your brain masks those noises so you can concentrate on what the person is saying. A microphone can not duplicate your brain's filter, but using the right microphone, the right preamp, and the right recorder helps achieve the best possible result. My concept is to have my recordings sound as natural as a person standing in the room with you and not someone talking over a microphone.

Over the past 20 years, I have experimented with different types of microphones and equipment to get the best dialogue quality and have arrived at a recording chain that truly gives the best representation of the human voice. Although typically short term projects, I love working on commercials, and have worked on a variety of local and national commercials including:

Coke, Total Gym, Toyota, Ford, Electrolux, Dr. Pepper, Frito Lay, Pepsi, Dillards, Chevy Trucks, AMC Theaters, Phillips HD, Texas Instruments, Hewlett Packard, JC Penny, Kitchen Aid, Nokia, MTV, Saturn, Major League Baseball, Target, Southwest Airlines, General Mills, Blockbuster, Ernst & Young, Sally Beauty Supply, Siemens, Johnson & Johnson, and Home Depot.

I have been the production mixer on many different types of movies and television shows. This allows me to tap into the artistic/creative side of audio engineering. My extensive experience in evaluating scenes helps to provide the best possible soundtrack for your production. I am available to travel and remain on location for the duration of the movie or as a second unit mixer.

Since 1994 I have worked for a variety of corporations providing audio engineering services for their live web/satellite broadcasts. Live broadcasts draw on a different set of skills – often involving both live and remote presenters as well as multiple playback sources, phone bridges and satellite links. This is no place for inexperience because you only get one chance to get it right. One client even sent me to another country to consult with their local team to help them develop their live broadcast capabilities in-country.

For 5 years I traveled with HDNet for the weekly show True Music. During that time we recorded over 400 musical acts. I was responsible for multi-track recording of live concerts and interviews with the artists. As a musician, I have spent many years producing and mixing studio recordings for bands. I really enjoy the opportunity to travel and work with such a variety of musicians, many of whom are my idols.

Because of my music background and contacts, I am also called to do playback operation for shows and music videos.

Reality TV is often a faster pace and requires more creative solutions for the challenges as they arrive. In 1998, I was the production sound mixer for a pilot called Cheaters. Little did I know that Reality TV would have such an impact on broadcast television. Since then, I have been a part of reality shows for networks including: Discovery, History, Lifetime, E!, A&E, Biography, BET, MTV, VH1, WE, Bravo, HDNet, CMT, Nick, TLC, and NTGEO. Every show is different and requires an experienced audio engineer and a variety of equipment to get the job done.

When I was 16, my dad encouraged me to find a career that I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life and be the best I can be at it. Through my background as a musician, I was exposed to sound recording and mixing, and consequently built a career that allowed me to use electronic technology and creativity at the same time. My dedication to quality work and creativity, and my experience in finding the best audio solutions is why I have producers and directors that continue to request my work project after project – year after year. I am based in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex area and am willing to travel to production locations. Click here for my resume.
